Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: Another Humiliation Or Revenge?

Thirteen Months ago, shortly after the resumption of football around the globe after a compulsory break due to the Covid 19 Pandemic in the 2019‑20 season came an exciting Fixture Barcelona Vs Bayern Munich in a One-Off Quater final Champions league match which ended in a humiliating defeat for the Blaugranas. The worst European night for the club – a night to forget but  unfortunately, history doesn’t forget.

Fast forward to this day, September 14, 2021, the fixture is upon us again as both Group E teams begin their champions league for 2021 -22 season campaign but this time as echoed by the Barcelona captain, Sergio Busquets – It’s different teams, seasons and circumstances as reported by Marca. That said its worthy of note that a lot has changed since the Last encounter especially for Barcelona.

While the we have few notables Absentees from the Bayern side that last defeated Barcelona with players like Thiago Alcantara leaving for Liverpool after that season while David Alaba and Javi Martinez both left for free after the expiration of their contracts to Real Madrid and Qatar Sc respectively. Also, then Head coach, Hansi Flick departed the club this summer to replace Joachim Low as the Head coach of the German national team.

Barcelona, meanwhile is the team to have undergone the most changes since that match as the embarrassment that night provoked quick actions from the then barcelona board headed by Josep Bartomeu. Qique Setien, the head coach who was appointed midway the season after the sacking of Enersto Valverde was also shown the way out with notable dressing room heavyweights such as Luis suarez, Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic and one of the protagonists in the awful performance, Nelson semedo all shipped out. It didnt stop there as barcelona also lost their two star attackers, Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi due to financial crises the club is suffering from.

However, the most peculiar case is that of Philippe Coutinho who was part of the Bayern team that thrashed Barcelona whilst on loan from Barcelona scoring two goals and adding an assist in the match despite coming in as a substitute. The player returned back to his parent club last season and was counted on by new head coach Ronald Koeman, thriving in his first few matches he played for the club before picking up an injury that ruled him out of the rest of the campaign and although, he has been given the medical green light at the beginning of this season, he is yet to get a minute of action as the club and manager doesn’t want to rush him, although it is expected that he will get some playing time today due to the high number of injured players in attack for Barcelona
